You can use any color background but it really works best on white. Tear a piece of 4/14 x 5 1/2 at an angle. Use dotto to adhere to one part of the card stock you are going to use. Use a background stamp like En Francais to stamp first. Use any color combination colors you want. Then use whatever stamp set you are going to use and stamp over the background stamp with different colors. After you have finished, then sponge on color to finish the look. Remove the mask and voile' you have faux torn vellum. I don't really know why it is called that, but that is how you get the look.
